Multilingual Learners

Multilingual Learners Program Overview
Ipswich Public Schools provides a dedicated support program for students who are English Learners (EL). Through a combination of screening, identification, targeted instruction, and family-engagement resources, the district ensures that newly enrolled students whose home language suggests possible need for additional English-language support are identified and supported.

Key components include:

  • Home Language Survey: Upon enrollment, parents complete a survey (available in multiple languages) to help determine whether a student needs EL assessment.

  • Eligibility & Placement: Students who meet screening criteria are placed in the ELL/EL program, where staff and classroom teachers collaborate to support language development alongside standards-based grade-level instruction.

  • Program Goals: The main objective is for EL students to become proficient in English, while simultaneously ensuring access to the full academic curriculum and grade-level expectations.

  • Family & Community Support: The ELL program offers resources for families — including multilingual surveys and communication materials — and translation/interpretation services where needed.

  • Transition & Monitoring: As students progress, ELL status may change (e.g., exit criteria), with continued monitoring and support to ensure sustained success in the mainstream classroom.
